FAQ on TSC® printheads

How long do TSC printheads last?

The life expectancy of a TSC printhead is measured in km. The average distance each head can print before it needs to be replaced is 30km. However, this depends a lot on how you treat it. Printer heads are delicate and subject to wear. It’s important to maintain them well, to get the longest life and best print quality from them.

What can I do to get the longest life from your printheads?

Clean the printhead often with a certified cleaning product. TSC recommends to wipe the printhead with every few roll changes. In addition, your printer settings can have a positive impact on the life of a printer head. Also, consider printing in thermal transfer mode, using a thermal transfer ribbon. Because of the smoother surface of the ribbon, the printhead experiences less friction and wear. Using 4U thermal transfer ribbons, the printhead may last up to 3 times longer.

What is the difference between a print head and an ink cartridge?

The ink cartridge is the part that contains the ink and the print head is the part in the printer that ejects the ink onto the paper. The ink is ejected onto the paper in small amounts through small nozzles in the print head. The print head is driven by a stepper motor that moves a distribution belt inside the printer.

Can printheads be cleaned?

You can clean the print heads manually or from a printer or computer. Before you begin, perform a nozzle check to make sure your print heads need cleaning, as this will save ink.

How often should the printhead be cleaned?

Regular use and weekly maintenance is good practice. If the printer is not used often, we recommend that you remove the ink cartridges from the printer, replace them in the holder that came with the refillable ink cartridges, and thoroughly clean the print heads before using them again.

What causes a printhead to eventually fail?

Printheads eventually fail due to internal microelectronic failures for the following reasons: general print usage and customer printer maintenance, printer job cycle (i.e. the number of pages printed per month) and print frequency (i.e. the time between each print job.) ), print mode, etc.

When should I replace my TSC printhead?

When you see spots, white lines, light images or unreadable barcodes, it’s time to take action. Clean the TSC printhead. Test if that solves the problem. If it doesn’t, then your Honeywell printhead could be at the end of its life. These are indications that it needs to be replaced.
